Career Development Checklist

By Craig Borysowich

Individuals need to understand that they must take responsibility for their own career progression. The purpose of this checklist is to help an individual assess the extent to which he or she is contributing towards his or her own career development.

Questions

1. To what extent do you understand the goals of your current project/assignment and how they fit within the goals of the overall organization (the bigger picture)?

2. To what extent do you fully understand your job and know your way around the company (e.g., company policies and procedures, systems, how things get done in this organization)?

3. To what extent do you take the initiative to do things over and above those that your manager asks you to do?

4. To what extent do you take the initiative and responsibility for your own training? What new skills have you developed recently?

5. To what extent do you take initiative and responsibility for finding your own solutions to the problems that you encounter (rather than expecting your manager to solve them for you)?

6. To what extent do you create visibility for yourself (such as by participating constructively in meetings, showing an interest in the growth of the company, and participating in employee groups)? How?

7. Have you been sought out recently for information or advice? If so, by whom and for what?

8. To what extent are you a team player? How do you show respect for your fellow team members? How do you help co-workers meet their goals?

9. What is your preferred level of supervision?

10. Have you aligned yourself with a peer so that you can get candid feedback on your performance? If so, how are you doing?

11. Which of your previous projects or assignments have you found to be most enjoyable and why?

12. What did you like least about some of these assignments and why?

13. Have you established what you would like to be doing in two to five years? If so, what?

14. Have you shared your career goals and aspirations with your manager? When and how did you last do this?

15. Do you know the criteria for advancement to the next position? What are they?

16. Which areas of your personal performance are you most looking to improve upon in order to advance to the next position? What kinds of development activities do you need to strengthen yourself in these areas?

17. Besides salary and benefits, what do you look for in your working life?

18. To what extent are you able to meet any special requirements of a job (e.g., travel, overtime, weekend work, heavy deadline pressure, etc.)?

19. Do you know how your performance compares with that of others with your level of experience? If so, how does it compare?
